When it comes to modding Seiko watches, having a proper watch movement holder is a must. These tools are designed to secure the movement in place while you fit the dial, install or remove hands, or carry out any adjustments or servicing. Trying to do these delicate tasks with the movement free-floating is a recipe for damage—not to mention frustration.

There are two main types of watch movement holders used in watchmaking: adjustable (universal) holders and movement-specific holders. Each has its place depending on your level of experience and the exact work you’re doing.

Adjustable (Universal) Watch Movement Holders – Seiko Mod Tools

These are the most commonly used holders for modding, especially when working on a variety of movements.

Bergeon 4040

  • This is the gold standard of adjustable watch movement holders. It’s made in Switzerland and features a precise, stable mechanism that firmly grips the movement without damaging it. The Bergeon 4040 is an excellent choice for anyone doing regular Seiko mods, as it accommodates a wide range of calibers with minimal fuss.

Horotech 09.004 & 09.104

Horotec’s adjustable watch movement holders are among the best available, with both the 09.004 (metal) and 09.104 (synthetic) versions offering Swiss-made precision and excellent build quality. The 09.004 features a robust metal construction that provides a stable and secure grip on the movement, while the 09.104 uses a synthetic material designed to reduce the risk of scratching delicate components—ideal for those working with high-polish or sensitive movements. Both are fully adjustable to fit a wide range of calibers, making them well-suited for Seiko modding. Whether you choose the durability of the 09.004 or the scratch-protection of the 09.104, it often comes down to personal preference—many modders prefer one over the other, or keep both on the bench as part of a mixed toolkit.

Generic Clone 4040 – Watch Movement Holders

  • Clones of the Bergeon 4040 – These are widely available and much cheaper than the original. However, as with most imitation tools, quality can vary. Common issues include poor machining, loose movement fit, or the movement shifting when pressure is applied—especially when pressing hands.

When using universal holders with Seiko 7S, NH, or 4R movements, it’s best practice to remove the rotor from the movement beforehand. Also orientate the balance wheel so it is not impacting on the press. This allows the movement to sit flat and helps avoid strain or damage while working.

Movement-Specific Holders – Seiko Mod Tools

These are designed to fit a single movement reference precisely. While brands like Bergeon, Horotec, and Horia make a wide range of high-end holders for specific Swiss calibres, they’re often overkill (or simply incompatible) for Seiko modding purposes.

That said, there are some exceptions: Far East made & 3D printed watch movement holders

  • 7S / NH-Specific Holders – Available from sellers on eBay and AliExpress, these holders are designed to work with Seiko 7S26, NH35, NH36, and similar movements. While they may allow some slight rotation of the movement under pressure, they hold the movement securely enough to perform most modding tasks safely. These are a great low-cost option for modders working primarily with Seiko automatics. There may beslight variations in size and shape but essentially these are made to fit the 7S family of movements – thing included the 4Rxx, NHxx, 6Rxx and NExx calibres. There are generic holders and other that most are produced as a cottage industry by modding enthusiasts with a 3D printer.

Which One Should You Choose? – Seiko Mod Tools

If you’re only modding modern Seiko automatics like the NH35 or 7S26, a 7S-specific holder will likely do the trick. It’s an affordable and effective option that holds the movement firmly enough for hand setting and dial work.

If you’re working with a wider range of movements or simply want a long-term, reliable solution, the Bergeon 4040 is worth the investment. It fits everything from Seiko to Swiss calibres and will provide years of reliable use.

Our Workshop Take

At Seiko Modder, we’ve had hands-on experience with nearly all the watch movement holders mentioned, except for the newer universal copper, the Horotec 09.104, and the synthetic clone. Among the tools we use regularly, the Bergeon 4040 stands out for its reliability. Our aluminum clone of this model was retired long ago due to its inferior performance. The Horotec 09.004 sees almost as much use as the Bergeon 4040 in our workshop. While the synthetic Bergeon occasionally makes an appearance, it’s not as favoured as we once anticipated. In terms of grip, the Bergeon 4040 and Horotec 09.004 are comparable, offering superior hold compared to the synthetic 4040, which still outperforms the older clone we possess. It’s worth noting that our clone is over a decade old, and newer versions may have seen improvements.

The Seiko 7S family-specific watch movement holders are handy spares, but their quality varies. Some provide a snug fit, occasionally making it challenging to release the movement, while others are too loose, allowing unwanted movement. If you’re new to modding and seeking a universal watch movement holder, the Bergeon 4040 is a worthwhile investment that will last a lifetime. However, the Horotec 09.004 is equally competent. As you delve deeper into modding, acquiring one of these will enhance your experience, making Seiko modding less frustrating and more enjoyable.

For those starting out, it’s worth noting that Seiko SKX and 5KX models can often be sourced second-hand at relatively affordable prices. These watches serve as excellent platforms for novice modders to practice and hone their skills. We offer a comprehensive guide specifically tailored to modding the SKX and 5KX, covering everything you need to know. The techniques and knowledge gained from this guide are transferable, equipping you with the skills necessary to craft custom watches using Seiko-based movements.

Final Tips – Seiko Mod Tools

  • Remove the rotor before mounting the movement in a holder—when using universal holders—to avoid putting pressure on the automatic winding mechanism.
  • Never overtighten the holder. Too much clamping force can bend or damage the movement plate.
  • A proper watch movement holder not only makes your work easier—it protects your components and keeps everything steady during delicate procedures like hand installation.

Whether you’re just starting out or building a pro-grade Seiko modding setup, the right watch movement holder is essential. Pick the one that suits your needs, and you’ll make your modding life a whole lot smoother. For more information on Tools See our Seiko Modder Basic Tool Kit.
